Ronald Maio

Professor Ronald F. Maio was appointed Director of the Office of Human Research Compliance Review (OHRCR) on May 1, 2006. Dr. Maio has a faculty appointments in the Medical School as Professor of Emergency Medicine. Prior to being appointed Director he was the Assistant Dean for Research Regulatory Affairs at the Medical School and also was the Director of the University of Michigan's Injury Research Center, based in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He served as a member of UM IRBMED from 1997 to 2003.

In 1972 Dr. Maio received his BS in Chemistry from Regis University in Denver, Colorado and his DO degree from Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) in 1976. After completing his internship and serving in the US Army, he did an Emergency Medicine Residency at MSU affiliated hospitals in Lansing, Michigan, and is board certified in Emergency Medicine. In 1988 he received an MS in Clinical Research Design and Statistical Analysis from UM SPH. Before coming to UM in 1989 he was an Assistant Professor at MSUCOM.

Dr Maio's primary areas of research have been traumatic injury and also the effectiveness of ambulance systems. His research has ranged from epidemiologic studies and observational studies to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and he has conducted studies in children and adults. He had a particular interest in the relationship of alcohol and other drugs to the occurrence and severity of injury and the outcomes following injury.

Dr. Maio views OHRCR as an institutional resource that can facilitate research of the highest ethical and scientific quality while maximizing human subject safety.
